04/23/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Coming off a hard-fought series in Chicago, a weary Detroit Tigers squad heads west for back-to-back meetings with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim beginning tonight.
Three of Detroit's last four contests have gone into extra innings, including the final two encounters of its three-game set with the White Sox. The Tigers came out on the short end in the first two of those extended matchups, but rebounded with a thrilling 6-5, 12-inning triumph over Chicago Sunday at U.S. Cellular Field.
Marcus Thames sent the game into additional frames with a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth, while Placido Polanco delivered the game- wining single in the 12th as the Tigers put an end to a three-game losing streak.
Polanco finished 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI and Magglio Ordonez added a two- run single for Detroit, which avenged Saturday's 7-5, 10-inning defeat to the Sox. The Tigers also lost in 10 innings to Kansas City on Wednesday.
Tigers starter Justin Verlander surrendered three runs on just four hits over seven innings of work in a no decision. Jason Grilli (1-1) earned the win with a scoreless top of the 12th.
Detroit will be facing a resurgent Anaheim club fresh off a three-game home sweep of Seattle over the weekend. The Angels had lost six in a row prior to the series.
In Sunday's finale, Ervin Santana threw seven strong innings to lead Los Angeles to a 6-1 victory over the struggling Mariners.
Santana (2-2) scattered six hits and allowed one run while striking out five with just one walk. Gary Matthews Jr., Vladimir Guerrero and Casey Kotchman each finished with two hits and an RBI at the plate, while Garret Anderson added an RBI double in the win.
The Angels have now won eight of their 10 home games so far in 2007.
Jered Weaver makes his second start off the disabled list for Anaheim in tonight's opener. The young standout had a losing -- albeit encouraging -- effort in Oakland last Tuesday, as Weaver allowed four runs (three earned) and just four hits in a six-inning stint. He was done in by a rough fourth inning in which the Athletics scored all four of their runs.
The 24-year-old, who missed the first two weeks because of tendinitis in his right biceps, put together a sensational rookie campaign in 2006. Weaver posted an 11-2 record and an outstanding 2.56 earned run average in 19 starts after being called up from the minors in late May. He also yielded just 94 hits and recorded 105 strikeouts over 123 innings of work.
This will be Weaver's first career start against Detroit.
The Tigers counter with Mike Maroth, who won his first two starts of the season before turning in a no decision at home against Kansas City on Tuesday. The left-hander allowed four runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings in that game.
Maroth owns a 4-2 record despite a career 5.55 ERA in eight previous starts against the Angels. He lost his only outing against Anaheim last season, however, giving up four runs and nine hits over six frames in Angel Stadium on April 26, 2006.
Detroit dropped two of three games to the Angels in their lone visit to southern California last season and is just 5-11 as the visitor in this series since 2004. Los Angeles took five of the eight overall matchups between the clubs last year.

Big 12 Conference betting odds
Work left to do: Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Kansas State
Texas joins Texas A&M and Kansas as locks after getting league win No. 11. Texas Tech greatly helped its own hopes and crippled OK State's with the two-point win Saturday. Is K-State the last reasonable hopeful? Could be an elimination match in Stillwater on Tuesday, at least for the Cowboys.
Work left to do:
Texas Tech [18-11 (7-7), RPI: 44, SOS: 12] A critical two-point win over OK State leaves the Red Raiders with Baylor and at Iowa State left. Get both and the Red Raiders likely are good to go. Get one and there could be some interesting comparisons with a K-State team that could finish two or three games "ahead" of them in the standings but doesn't have any of the quality wins Texas Tech has. Not a lot in nonconference play (against Arkansas in Little Rock being the best win, by far) to lean on.
Oklahoma State [18-9 (5-8), RPI: 50, SOS: 35] Still without a road win, the Cowboys now need to win two on the road just to get to .500 in conference play. It's hard to recall a team (OK, other than Clemson) falling so precipitously from lock status to almost certainly out of the NCAAs at this point. There are wins to be had in the last three, including a very big home game against K-State on Tuesday, but this team is reeling. Can you tell the pressure to win is getting to them with the way the final possession played out at Texas Tech? There are some good nonconference performances to lean on, specifically beating Missouri State and Syracuse on neutral floors and Pitt in OK City, but if the Pokes don't right this very, very soon, that won't be enough.
Kansas State [20-9 (9-5), RPI: 56, SOS: 96] It pays to be in the Big 12 North. The nine league wins are Colorado (twice), Missouri (twice), Iowa State (twice), Baylor, Nebraska and (a good one against) Texas. That helps explain the middling computer profile. The win over USC is nice, but the nonconference leaves a lot to be desired. The game at OK State in Stillwater on Tuesday is huge, as it could KO the Cowboys and leave K-State with a home date against Oklahoma with which to work.
MySportsbook.com: NBA Championship Odds
With the playoffs about two months away, the top two teams in the Western Conference are the clear cut leaders to win the NBA Championship. The Dallas Mavericks have the best record in the NBA (44-9) and have been absolutely scorching since the second week of the season. What makes the Mavs’ record more impressive is the fact that they dropped their first four games of the season. Currently they have won 17 out of their last 18 and are MySportsbook.com’s favorite (2-1) to win it all. Right behind the Mavs are the Pacific leading Phoenix Suns (39-13). Last season, the Suns lost in the Conference Finals to non-other then the Mavericks four games to two. Of course the Suns were without center Amare Stoudemire who has is averaging 19.9 PPG and 9.5 RPG since coming back from his knee injury. Unlike the Mavs, the Suns have struggled a bit lately having lost their last three and four out of their last seven. Of course the main reason for their three straight loses is due to the absence of two time MVP Steve Nash, who is out with a shoulder injury. Heads-up, the Mavs have beaten the Suns in both of their meetings this season.
In the Eastern Conference, the Pistons (32-19) are the favorites to win it all at 6-1. The addition of Chris Webber seems to have been a good move for the Pistons. Since coming over from the 76ers, Webber has averaged 13.1 PPG and 7.3 RPG and the Pistons are 11-4. Even though the defending champion Heat are currently on the playoff making cusp, they are the Eastern Conference team that is getting the most action to win it all (9-1). The fact that Shaquille O’Neal is back in the starting lineup after missing 39 games probably has something to do with this. No doubt, Shaq makes a difference when in the lineup as their winning six out of their last seven would indicate.
